Samrat Choudhary: Bihar’s New CM & End of the Nitish Era

Samrat Choudhary is the new chief minister of Bihar, ending the Nitish era.

Nitish Kumar was the most important person in Bihar politics for almost 20 years. That time is officially over as of April 15, 2026. Bihar has made history by swearing in a new chief minister. Samrat Choudhary is now the new chief minister of the state. He is also the first BJP leader to hold that position. This is everything you need to know.

What Happened?
After chairing his last cabinet meeting on April 14, 2026, Nitish Kumar stepped down as chief minister of Bihar. He stepped down to take his new seat in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament. Nitish told Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain at the Raj Bhavan stated that he was resigning. “I have done a lot of work for the people of Bihar,” he said. The new government will take care of it now.

After he left, BJP leaders met in the Central Hall of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, where Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was in charge. Everyone agreed that Samrat Choudhary, who was then the deputy CM and a senior OBC Kushwaha leader, should be the BJP legislature party leader. At 11 AM the next day, April 15, he took the oath of office as chief minister at Raj Bhavan. At the historic ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were there.

Why is the issue of caste-based reservation so important for Bihar?
This is more than just a normal change of leadership; it’s a historic event. The BJP had never held the chief minister’s post directly in Bihar before. Nitish Kumar and his JD(U) party always held the top job in the NDA coalition, even though they were the most powerful partner for years.

The BJP’s victory with 89 seats in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections made it the largest party. The party has now finished building up its political power in the Hindi heartland. People see Samrat Choudhary’s rise as a strategic move because he is a well-known OBC Kushwaha community leader who brings a lot of social support that the BJP needs to keep in Bihar’s complicated caste system.
It’s important to note that Samrat Choudhary is the son of Shakuni Choudhary, who used to be a close advisor to Nitish Kumar. This makes the change even more symbolic.

What will happen next in Bihar?
Nitish Kumar has promised to fully support and guide the new government, and JD(U) is still a part of the NDA coalition. The alliance is still going strong, for now. But everyone will be watching to see how Samrat Choudhary does on his own, without “Sushasan Babu” hanging over him.

The most important question going forward is whether development projects in Bihar will continue at the same pace. Will the new chief minister support a stronger BJP agenda? With the West Bengal elections already underway and national politics becoming more intense, both Delhi and the opposition will be closely monitoring Bihar’s new political setup.

In conclusion
Nitish Kumar’s 20 years as Bihar’s chief minister are over. This is the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. The real test for the 13 crore people of Bihar is whether Samrat Choudhary can govern, not just run for office. This event is a first in history. This is the challenging part now.
